One popular choice is the Turcom TS-6608N, a small square tablet with rounded edges. It comes with a basic pen and quick shortcut keys for common actions.

It’s definitely a small surface and it’s not great for professionals who need more advanced features. But the TS-6608 functions well as a beginner’s tablet, or even as a smaller alternative when traveling.

It’s certainly not without its flaws but the tablet is surprisingly versatile and easily affordable if you’re new to digital art.

Overview

A very small tablet compared to others on the market, the Turcom TS-6608 has a drawing area of 8″x6″. It’s super light only weighing 2lbs, and it’s one of the cheapest tablets you can find.

This very basic Turcom model comes with a surprisingly comfortable pen and some replacement nibs. It’s powered entirely by USB so you just plug it in and get going.

One thing you’ll notice is the decorative border of white symbols around the edge. These icons replace the hotkeys you typically find on other drawing tablets. So instead of having clickable buttons you have touch areas that represent different actions like Save, Copy/Paste, and New Window.

Ironically this is a complete rebranding of the Huion P608N tablet with the same features under a different name. However the Turcom seems to be a little cheaper, so all-in-all this may be the better option assuming you don’t care about brand name.

Basic Setup

You get a small quickstart guide in the box, but it’s not very useful at all. Directions aren’t clear and they’re especially confusing for non-technical users.

The setup actually shouldn’t take very long but it can be confusing.

You’ll want to first install the drivers that came with the tablet or check the Turcom website for downloads. Sadly Turcom doesn’t have the best online documentation so you may need to scour through their site to find the newest drivers to download.

This is probably the most annoying part of the entire setup. Once you can get the drivers going you just plug the tablet in via USB(when instructed) and you should be good to go.

Physical construction of the tablet is definitely good enough for the price. It’s thin, lightweight, and the screen layer is easy to draw over.

Just thinking about an 8×6 rectangle may seem very small in your mind. And in comparison to other models it definitely is. But this isn’t so small that you can’t draw on it.

I’d say the TS-6608 is just small enough to be valuable for a basic setup, but not so small that you can’t accomplish anything.

The tablet’s surface does include general hotkeys as pressable areas on the screen. Since the tablet is already so small this can be a drawback. I found it a little frustrating with so many different options jammed together.

While the default pen is great and comes with clickable customized buttons, it may not be the only pen you want to use. In this case you can easily swap out pens from other models and use them interchangeably.

The default pen comes with three replacement nibs and takes AAA batteries.

Since this is down towards the lower end of the market you can’t expect many great features. But if you’re OK with that you can go into it expecting little and getting a lot.

My biggest concern is the lack of durability. This is a very cheap tablet and it’s also the smallest model model. It’s really not made to be super durable, but it doesn’t seem to be a great piece of engineering either.
